About IOOS Association

IOOS Association is a national nonprofit organization established to advance U.S. IOOS and the national coastal observation information needs. Working with the 11 Regional Associations, U.S. IOOS Program Office, NOAA federal agencies, and other partners, the Association fosters communication across the program, strengthens intra-regional relationships, and promotes integration and coordination.

IOOS Association brings together Federal and non-Federal partners to support national the national system.

IOOS Association promotes the integration of the regional system into the national network to enhance observational and predictive abilities.

IOOS Association communicates about the importance of coastal observing.

The Board of Directors is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization.  Each Regional Association (RA) appoints two representatives to the Board of Directors but each RA only has one vote.  The Board may delegate to committees and officers as it sees fit and can adopt policies and procedures.

Board Policies


U.S. IOOS Regional Associations (RAs) engage with their communities to learn about user needs for coastal information and data. Representatives from all 11 RAs participate in the IOOS Outreach Committee. The committee holds monthly calls to share and discuss effective communication strategies, successes and lessons learned. By sharing knowledge, RAs are significantly leveraging resources both financially and programmatically.
