IOOS Association at the Federal Advisory Council Meeting

The IOOS Advisory Committee is meeting November 3-4, 2016 in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Josie Quintrell, IOOS Association Executive Director, will be attending and speaking at the meeting. Click here to access meeting materials.

The U.S. IOOS Advisory Committee, per Section 12304 of the Act, shall advise the NOAA Administrator and the Interagency Ocean Observation Committee (IOOC) on:

  • administration, operation, management, and maintenance of the U.S. IOOS, including integration of federal and non-federal assets and data management and communication aspects of U.S. IOOS, in fulfillment of the ICOOS Act;
  • expansion and periodic modernization and upgrade of technology components of U.S. IOOS;
  • identification of end-user communities, their needs for information provided by U.S. IOOS, and U.S. IOOS’ effectiveness in disseminating information to end-user communities and the general public; and any other purpose identified by the Administrator or the IOOC.

Pictured above is Dr. Miguel Canals Silander of CariCOOS briefing the IOOS Federal Advisory Committee in St. Thomas VI on the importance of observation and modeling for the area.  He stated prior to IOOS, there were no ocean observing assists. IOOS has sponsored buoys, HFR, and modeling to address a number of key issues.
